EGBOK | Empowering Women Through Well-being Workshops
Navutu Dreams Resort & Wellness Retreat sponsored and hosted a series of Women’s Well-being workshops and private yoga therapy sessions for the young adult students from our neighboring non-profit organization, EGBOK. Part of Navutu Dreams’ social responsibility and commitment to proactively engage with its local communities, these workshops aim to empower the female EGBOK students, usually from impoverished and at-risk backgrounds, by teaching them self-care techniques to stay healthy as they enter careers in the demanding hospitality industry. The workshops were led by one of our yoga instructors, Irene Lavina, a certified yoga therapist, meditation facilitator and wellness consultant. She also provided private yoga therapy sessions for students living with anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The Women’s Well-being series, which took place in July and was attended by 26 young women, taught the students health fundamentals: how they felt and how much energy they had was affected by menstrual cycles, by what they ate and how they slept or managed stress. The workshops focused on the following themes: getting to know your menstrual cycle as tool for energy management; nutrition and digestion for a healthy hormone balance; and keeping your back safe at work (ergonomics). In order to cultivate body awareness and mindfulness in their busy lives, Irene had the women track their menstrual cycles, their diets and cravings, psycho-emotional states, sleep, elimination and energy levels during the course month. The women learned simple mindfulness and yoga techniques for daily self-care, such as how to manage menstrual pain, improve digestion, and prevent back injuries with yoga poses.
EGBOK (Everything’s Gonna Be OK) is an organization in Siem Reap, Cambodia that enables under-served young adults to be self-supporting by providing them education, training, and employment opportunities in the hospitality industry. The organization utilizes a comprehensive approach with an emphasis on life skills development.
The collaboration with EGBOK is rooted in Navutu Dreams’ community involvement initiative which supports non-profit organizations in the local communities as they thrive through economic development, education, personal advancement and health & wellness. As EGBOK’s new focus is to build a more structured women’s empowerment program and develop a curriculum that will complement their life skills training, Navutu Dreams took the opportunity to contribute to this wonderful program.
